The Problem — America’s Aging Infrastructure Is Already Losing the Battle

Here’s what I’ve seen firsthand, and what the headlines are finally catching up to: America’s infrastructure wasn’t built for what’s coming.

In northern Michigan last month, rivers surged to record levels after snowmelt and weeks of heavy rain, pushing aging dams to the very brink of failure.

Officials and engineers watching those structures held their breath.

Some communities didn’t have to imagine the worst — they were living it.

The hard truth, from my experience, is this: those storms are not the exception anymore.

They are the preview.

What we are witnessing is not a series of rare events — it is the new baseline.

And America’s dams, bridges, levees, and infrastructure were not designed for it.

According to American Rivers, dam removals have outpaced new dam construction in the United States since 2000 — and that trend is accelerating.

We are removing infrastructure faster than we are building it, while what remains grows older and more vulnerable with every passing storm season.

It seems to me that this is the moment when building owners, facility managers, public works departments, and government agencies must stop treating extreme weather as the worst-case scenario and start treating it as typical of the future.

The Escalation — It’s Not Just the Storm. It’s What the Storm Reveals.

What I tell my family, friends and clients — and what decades of field work have shown me — is that catastrophic structural failures rarely happen all at once.

They happen in slow motion.
