The Importance of the Roofing Revolution: Advancements and Applications

Roofing systems have come a long way over the years, evolving from mere protective structures to innovative solutions that contribute to energy efficiency and sustainability.
With the rising concerns about climate change and the need for renewable energy sources, the roofing revolution has gained significant importance.
In this Blog, I’ll explore some of the key advancements in roofing technology and their applications, with a particular focus on solar reflective roofing systems, environmental coatings for roofs.
Solar reflective roofing systems have emerged as a game-changer in the roofing industry. These systems are designed to reflect a significant portion of the solar radiation that falls on the roof, reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the building.
By minimizing heat absorption, solar reflective roofs help to lower the energy demand for cooling during hot summer months. This, in turn, reduces the reliance on air conditioning and other electric cooling systems and decreases the overall energy consumption of the building.
Additionally, solar reflective roofing systems can mitigate the urban heat island effect by minimizing the heat radiated back into the atmosphere, thereby improving the overall environmental comfort in urban areas.
Another noteworthy advancement in the roofing industry is the development of environmental coatings for roofs.
These coatings are designed to provide a protective, defensive layer on the roof surface while offering enhanced energy efficiency and environmental benefits.
They can take a roof with many pieces, having multiple parts with seams, gaps and transitions and quickly turn it into a seamless, monolithic, continuous membrane.
This continuous, fully adhered protective covering is the best defense against strong wind uplift. Since there are no penetration points for the wind to get through and rip up the roof parts causing costly damage.
Environmental coatings typically have high solar reflectance and thermal emittance properties, enabling them to reflect sunlight and release absorbed heat efficiently.
As a result, buildings with environmentally friendly coated roofs experience reduced heat transfer into the interior spaces, leading to lower cooling costs and improved occupant comfort.
In addition, The right coating can quickly restore an old worn out roof for another long lasting, renewable service life cycle, often turning it better than new.
Moreover, environmental coatings can extend the lifespan of the roof by protecting it from weathering, decay from UV radiation, and chemical damage, reducing the need for frequent roof replacements and minimizing waste generation.
One prominent player in the roofing revolution is Global Encasement, Inc. (GEI), for 30 years being a leading provider of sustainable building solutions.
GEI specializes in developing and implementing innovative products and systems for roofs that contribute to energy efficiency, environmental protection, and cost savings.
The company has an extensive, worldwide portfolio of successful projects, showcasing the benefits achieved through their solutions.
For instance, GEI has completed numerous projects involving the application of solar reflective roofing systems. In these projects, the installation of reflective roofing membranes or coatings has resulted in significant energy savings for building owners.
By reducing heat absorption, these roofs have helped to lower cooling costs and create more comfortable indoor environments. GEI's solar reflective roofing systems have also contributed to sustainability efforts by reducing the overall carbon footprint of buildings and mitigating the urban heat island effect.

In addition to solar reflective systems, GEI has also made significant strides in the development and application of environmentally advanced coatings for roofs.
By utilizing eco-friendly and zero to low VOC (volatile organic compound) materials, GEI's coatings provide a strong protective barrier for roofs, extending their lifespan and reducing maintenance requirements.
These coatings offer excellent weather resistance, preventing water and damaging wind penetration while also protecting against corrosion.
Moreover, their high reflectance and emittance properties contribute to energy efficiency, resulting in lower cooling costs and reduced environmental impact.
The roofing revolution, driven by advancements such as restoration over removal and replacement, simple roof fortification against increasing strong storms, solar reflective roofing systems and environmental coatings, is reshaping the industry and providing sustainable solutions for the future.
The importance of these innovations cannot be overstated, as they address the pressing challenges of energy consumption, environmental impact, and climate change. With companies like Global Encasement, Inc. leading the way, the roofing industry is playing a crucial role in creating a more sustainable and energy-efficient built environment.
To sum it up, the roofing revolution brings forth advancements and applications that have significant implications for energy efficiency, sustainability, and environmental protection.
Solar reflective roofing systems and environmental coatings have proven to be game-changers, reducing energy consumption, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and extending the lifespan of roofs, thus, stopping the creation and storage of unnecessary harmful waste.
The success stories from Global Encasement, Inc. demonstrate the tangible benefits achieved through these innovations.
As we move forward, it is imperative to embrace and adopt these roofing advancements to create a greener and more sustainable future.

Short of moving your building or raising it up above flooding, the best approach to take to reduce storm, flooding and natural disaster losses is to simply use a proven coating to wind and waterproofthe surfaces in the path of destruction.

We recently passed the anniversary of 9-11-2001 tragedy of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York. I wanted to remind everyone that the effects of that fateful day are still being felt and especially by some of the heroes that were affected by the initial exposure and then the secondary exposure that took place during the cleanup. Some of those exposed were firefighters, police officers, EMTs (Emergency Medical Technician), construction workers, transit workers, cleanup workers, debris removal crews, truck drivers, nearby office workers, and Lower Manhattan residents.

I discussed in a recent blog the importance of keeping the aesthetics of a historic building intact. Making sure that the look and overall presentation on a structure is preserved is very significant. This is especially true with landmark properties that have prominent and distinct features. Preservation can become very difficult when it entails obsolete building materials that contain hazardous materials that are typically removed and replaced. Three of the most common of hazardous materials is lead-based paint, asbestos and PCBs. In the USA, lead was used in paints up until 1978. It then was banned for its negative health effects, especially with children in their developing stages. PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, were banned from paints, caulking and surface coatings in 1979 and asbestos was banned in 1974. All these bans were due to the negative health and environmental effects of these products.
